Safe handling in immersion tanks

Castrol, a research facility at the forefront of immersion cooling technology for data centers, faced unique challenges with safe and ergonomic handling of heavy server units. As the data center industry rapidly expands and adopts new cooling methods, Castrol needed a solution that would support them in developing the liquid cooling technology and ensure both equipment and personnel safety while working on new solutions for their customers.

The challenge

Castrol, a research facility pioneering immersion cooling for data centers, faced significant challenges handling heavy server units. The testing of solutions for immersion liquid cooling meant frequent lifting of servers in and out of tanks, but the facility’s narrow limited space made this difficult and risky. Manual handling posed safety concerns for both personnel and equipment, and strict regulations on battery charging further complicated operations. Castrol needed a solution that would ensure safety and efficiency.

The solution

To solve these issues, Castrol partnered with Pronomic, who began by visiting the site to understand the specific requirements. Together, they developed a custom Lift&Drive counterbalance lifter with a long jib arm, designed to reach deep into immersion tanks and move sideways to fit the tight layout. The lifter featured double sidemounted ergonomic handlebars, easy-rolling wheels, and a remote control for precise, safe operation. A drip tray was added to manage any liquid during server transport, and the PRX battery system allowed batteries to be detached and charged separately, with the option for dual battery packs to avoid stand still.

The Benefits

With the implementation of this tailored solution, Castrol now enjoys a flexible and intuitive lifting system that ensures safe and ergonomic handling of heavy server units within their immersion tanks. The lifter’s compact design and maneuverability make it perfectly suited to the tight layout of their research facility, while the innovative battery system and ergonomic features support continuous, efficient operations. Most importantly, Castrol is now able to provide a safe working environment for their staff and protect valuable equipment from damage.
By collaborating closely with Pronomic, Castrol has not only solved their immediate challenges but also positioned themselves for future growth and innovation in the evolving data center industry.
